Every staff meeting I have, I always start it the same way. “Tell me something good!”
I usually follow it up with, What are you happy about? What are you excited about? What are you grateful for? Every day, every staff meeting, every time. I think I forgot to do it once, and everyone looked at me like I had three heads. They got used to it. It’s an exercise that takes about 3 minutes, and I love it because it sets the stage for a great meeting and a great day.
Of course, this is just another version of the morning questions that Tony Robbins talks about in his books. But I like being able to remind them each day that they are in charge of what they focus on. We all have things happening in our lives that are positive, and things that are negative. We can all come up with something that excites us and juices us, or something to complain about. It’s our choice.
Think about it. Right now, all of us could probably rattle off a handful of things that aren’t really going our way, things that we’d much prefer to be different. And all of us could also list off a handful of circumstances that are absolutely amazing, and cause us to smile and feel grateful.
We can change how we feel in a moment by changing two things: our physical state, and what we focus on. We can move our bodies differently, more rapidly, breathe deeper, stand taller, have better posture, and instantaneously improve our mood. That’s one of the reasons why exercise feels so good. And, we can also ask ourselves powerful, positive questions that allow our brains to focus on empowering thoughts, versus those things that bring us down.
So especially at the beginning of the day of work, I like helping them create a peak state. “Tell me something good!” It’s always fun, it always makes people smile, and it always feels good.
